| How SOUTH TOWARD HOME Began |
After the storm Margaret and Kara knew
they had to do something to help, but didn’t know
where to start, especially since so much needed to be done.
Margaret went to visit her hometown on several occasions
to see the damage and witness the recovery progress. The
major (and minor) gaps in assistance soon became obvious.
We could not just rely on the larger organizations to take
us through the entire process.
After complaining a good deal about who was not doing what, we had an idea. “Let’s
start an organization of our own!” We decided to create South Toward
Home to address these unmet needs. To help identify these needs we enlisted
Project Manager Amy Hardee. |

| The SOUTH TOWARD HOME Ground Troops,
and Amy Hardee |
| Amy Hardee began her work in Katrina
recovery 2 weeks after the storm with a mission trip bringing
80,000 lbs. of supplies that had been generously donated
by the people of her town. . Amy along with Gayane Morse
Chambless had organized the trip with Bonnie and Robert
Travis and all headed down in his 82 foot long tractor
trailer. Amy realized Pass Christian was one of the hardest
areas hit and was inspired by the fighting spirit of the
townspeople she met. From there, using her background in
missionary work and construction Amy helped rally volunteers
of all kinds, to join her in clean up and construction.
And Project Renewal was born. She has organized students,
locals, churches and other advocates to join her in massive
jobs. She has repaired over 50 homes in eight trips since
the storm and is putting more people in their homes at
this very moment. |
| She is in constant
communication with the townspeople as well as town leaders
and considers the people of “the Pass” a second
family. Amy is known
for her do-it –yourself attitude. She waits for nothing; she just gets
in there and gets the job done. We are blessed to have her as board member and
project manager and excited to keep the project moving forward |
